"We were good friends with a
couple that was older than us. When she asked me if I would help do a
surprise party for her husband I said of course!
We had everything set up and ready,
with a bunch of friends and coworkers waiting for him to get home. Of
course, my husband had kept him at work long enough for us to do this.
Now, this gal had picked up the
cake she had made for the party. It had a picture on the top of the
cake. One of those paper type pictures.
I had always heard the joke about
so many candles the cake looks like it's on fire. This time I
witnessed it! One of the candles tipped over and actually lit his cake
on fire! (Since everybody was already harassing him about his age,
this just topped it off.)
He reached over and grabbed a cup off the
counter to put it out. Unfortunately the one he grabbed had alcohol,
not water.
Needless to say, nobody had cake but that was OK. We all
laughed so hard our sides hurt.
(There were no injuries or fire
damage, just lots of sore sides and stomachs from all the laughter.)

I
have a group of friends in my age bracket (shhhh!...50-plus!) who have
tons of parties, so we're always looking for reasons to celebrate--not
that we need a reason, but it's fun to have a "theme" to work
with. One of the best parties that I ever had was a
"When I'm 64" party.....in honor of Paul McCartney's famous
64th birthday a few years ago. It was a chance to get all of us
'baby boomers' together for a day of fun and to feel young again~~~and
it worked! We had over 100 people here (probably should
have invited Sir Paul!) and it was just a great way of getting everybody
together to celebrate living---no matter what our ages are.
I decorated with all of my old Beatles/ McCartney albums, magazines,
books and posters, and all afternoon and into the evening we listened to
music written and sung by Paul, and we danced the twist and played with
hula hoops and reminisced about growing up in the 60's. I had
various things around the house that made reference to Paul's songs, and
it was a fun challenge for everyone to come up with different
foods to make for the party. I made wings, of course, (Paul
McCartney and Wings!), and someone brought apples-(as in the record
label), and another person even made a 'strawberry patch' dessert---as
in "Strawberry Fields Forever". Lots of people showed up
in Beatles and Paul shirts, and for the day, we all felt like we were
teenagers again.
It was one of the best parties we ever had, and people are still talking
about what a great time they had. It's getting to the point
where we are all getting to that age, and it's good to know that
it can be FUN---and not a dreaded occasion!
Party Advice from Diane:
KEEP IT FUN!!!
Anyone can have a party, but one of the best things about a party is how
people remember it. You don't need to spend a fortune
decorating, but you do need to show that you put your "heart' into
the whole thing by the little things that make people notice that you
cared! If you're going to put the time and the effort into having
a party---have it right! It's good to have a 'theme' .....it gives
people something to work with and it makes them feel a part of it all.
